I gave a talk in summer 2024 at The Grading Conference called “Ungrading Four Years On: A Movement, A Backlash, A Rebranding, A Story.” It was a chance for me to think back about what had happened since the appearance in the world of a book I edited, Ungrading: Why Rating Students Undermines Learning (and What To Do Instead), which was published in 2020.
The book had gotten a lot of attention, in the world of pedagogy.
I gave a lot of talks and workshops, participated in a lot of podcasts.
There was a lot of enthusiasm, and some resistance.
The talk allowed me to catch up a bit on what had been happening and to put it into a broader context, both of progressive pedagogy and more generally of the nature of educational change.
I present here a PDF of what I’m thinking of as an e-book.
Enjoy!
